Wisdom Teeth

wisdom teeth removal Ballincollig
Adults have 32 teeth including our four wisdom teeth. They normally erupt behind our last molar teeth anytime between 17 and 25 years of age. Some people do not experience any discomfort during the eruption phase. If the size of the jaws is adequate the wisdom teeth should erupt normally.

Wisdom Tooth Problems!

However not everyone’s jaws are big enough to accommodate all 4 wisdom teeth. When there is not enough space for the erupting tooth problems occur:  Wisdom tooth can get stuck behind last molar tooth. This is often called an ‘Impacted Wisdom Tooth’.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth can cause:

  • Soreness, pain, and general discomfort in the Gum area around the tooth. This is often referred to as Pericoronitis (common if only a bit of wisdom tooth is erupted).
  • Ear ache or Toothache
  • Swelling in Face if tooth becomes badly infected.
  • Bad taste in mouth

Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Wisdom teeth especially Lower wisdom teeth can be lying at an angle against another Molar tooth. These impacted teeth are sometimes difficult to remove. Your Dentist may decide after reviewing your X-Rays to refer you to an Oral Surgeon. Extraction can be carried out under Local anaesthetic or General Anaesthetic.

Wisdom Tooth Pain Relief:

Relief from the initial pain and discomfort can be achieved using:

  • Salt and Water mouthwash (1/2 teaspoon of salt dissolved in a cup of lukewarm water) Patient should rinse  sore area 2 or 3 times daily
  • Regular mouth wash from Pharmacy eg Corsodyl or Kin
  • Antibiotics (prescribed by your Dentist)

If the above symptoms fail to resolve the pain then Extraction is the only option.

Wisdom Tooth Removal Recovery Time

This usually depends on how difficult the extraction was. If there was Minor oral Surgery involved and stitches used, it is normal to have some pain and discomfort. This may last a few days and gradually improve, with proper after care. Pain-killers such as Paracetomal or Ibuprofen are usually prescribed. Antibiotics may also be prescribed.

Good oral hygiene and proper maintenance of the extraction site are essential.

In this practice, we find certain Homeopathic Remedies especially helpful in promoting normal healing and rapid recovery.

Happy Patients

My experience in the O Connor dental health was pleasent. As a person who is nervous about visiting the dentist i felt very relaxed both in the waiting room and on the chair.Over the years i have attended a few different dentists and this has been the one practice where i felt relaxed and at ease due to the care of the staff. Before my procedures it was explained to me by the staff what to expect and i found this helped put me at ease. For any one who is nervous of visiting the dentists i would strongly recommend this practice.

My daughter needed orthodontic treatment. Tony did a very comprehensive plan for my daughter and went through it with me and my daughter in great detail before he began the treatment. We knew how long it was going to take and what exactly was involved. What I liked about Tony was, he was so enthusiastic himself about the treatment and took great pride in getting it right, tweaking a bit here and there to make sure he got the best result. He explained everything to my daughter and encouraged her through the treatment. Tony does not just look at the teeth but also the shape of her mouth and the overall look. I would highly recommend Tony and his team, he is a genuine, passionate and meticulous about his work and a very nice person as well. My daughter has a lovely smile and my younger daughter can't wait to start her treatment as she sees the fantastic results of Tony's work and can't wait to have the same fantastic smile.
