What is a Filling / Dental Restoration?

Tooth Fillings & Restoration Ballincollig

A filling is a method used to restore a damaged tooth back to its normal function and shape. If the tooth requires restoration due to decay, we first remove the decayed tooth material thus cleaning the entire area, finally filling the cleaned out cavity with a filling material.  This procedure prevents further decay of the tooth, and in turn saves the tooth.  If a decayed tooth is left untreated there is a good chance the decay will get worse and you will loose the tooth, so best to act quickly.

Do I need a Filling?

If you are unsure if you need a filling, please come in and get a check up with us. During a checkup, we will be able to examine the surfaces of each tooth, and decide if you need a filling or not.

If your teeth are over sensitive, if you have a toothache, a sharp or throbbing pain or pain when eating, these are signs you should come in for a checkup.
Also if you notice any changes in your teeth, such as a hole that you can see or feel, a rough or broken tooth then its also advisable to get your teeth checked out.

What types of fillings are available?

We used to provide tow types of fillings, but now we focus on offering the best filling type only, white composite fillings:

  • White Fillings (Composite)
White composite fillings are matched to be the same colour as your teeth and therefore used where a natural appearance is desired. These are quite durable, and prevent further damage to the tooth by covering the cavity and providing structural support to the tooth.

How is a Filling performed?

We will first remove the decay and clean the affected area. The cleaned-out cavity will then be filled by either the amalgam or composite material.  Getting a filling is a quick and easy procedure, normally only taking 15-20 minutes.

What are the after effects of a filling?

It is not unusual for a tooth to be a little sensitive after a filling, especially if the filling is deep. Teeth can be sensitive to cold drinks for instance, or even tender to bite on.
This usually only lasts a day or two and the tooth soon settles down. If not you should let your dentist know.

    Happy Patients

My experience in the O Connor dental health was pleasent. As a person who is nervous about visiting the dentist i felt very relaxed both in the waiting room and on the chair.Over the years i have attended a few different dentists and this has been the one practice where i felt relaxed and at ease due to the care of the staff. Before my procedures it was explained to me by the staff what to expect and i found this helped put me at ease. For any one who is nervous of visiting the dentists i would strongly recommend this practice.

My daughter needed orthodontic treatment. Tony did a very comprehensive plan for my daughter and went through it with me and my daughter in great detail before he began the treatment. We knew how long it was going to take and what exactly was involved. What I liked about Tony was, he was so enthusiastic himself about the treatment and took great pride in getting it right, tweaking a bit here and there to make sure he got the best result. He explained everything to my daughter and encouraged her through the treatment. Tony does not just look at the teeth but also the shape of her mouth and the overall look. I would highly recommend Tony and his team, he is a genuine, passionate and meticulous about his work and a very nice person as well. My daughter has a lovely smile and my younger daughter can't wait to start her treatment as she sees the fantastic results of Tony's work and can't wait to have the same fantastic smile.
