What is a Root Canal?

Root Canal Treatment Ballincollig

This treatment involves the removal of the nerve or nerves from a tooth. This is usually performed if a tooth is infected (Abscess) or irreversibly damaged due to dental decay or trauma.

A root treated tooth is a dead tooth and will discolour over time. The tooth is also structurally weaker, so may require a permanent restoration later, such as a Crown.

  • Single tooth root canal
  • Pre-Molar root canal
  • Multi-root canal (Molar tooth)

Root Canal Process

Normally a root canal entails four stages of treatment which usually can be complete over 2-3 visits to the dentist.

  1. We will firstly administer the local anaesthesia to numb the tooth and surrounding area. This is to ensure the tooth and surrounding area is numb, to ensure you feel no pain.
  2. We will then use specific dental drills to access the inside of the tooth by creating an opening in the top portion of the tooth. The dentist will then clear away the damaged and diseased pulp from the inside of the tooth. He or she will also use the files to shape the inner chamber of the tooth and root and might irrigate the chamber with water to wash away any remaining pulp. We also apply an antimicrobial solution in the chamber to kill any remaining bacteria and reduce the risk for further infection.
  3. Once the chamber is thoroughly cleaned and dried, we will fill the tooth with gutta percha, a rubber like material. While we wait for the permanent crown to go on top, we will place a temporary filling, .
  4. The last step we will complete the treatment process by placing the permanent crown or a similar type of restoration on the top of the tooth.

Does a Root Canal Hurt

The majority of patients feel little to no pain while a root canal is being performed. Before the procedure is done, the tooth and surrounding area are numbed to prevent the sensation of pain, with a local anaesthetic, the root canal procedure is not painful. The pain before the treatment and the reason you need a root canal, however, can cause some discomfort. While the thought of having to get a root canal may put you on edge, the treatment itself is a solution to a problem and here at O’Connor Dental Health, we are aiming to save your tooth. For a few days after the treatment, expect some pain and sensitivity.

Aftercare of a Root Canal

The tooth treated should be cared for in the same as any other tooth. You may need to schedule an additional visit with us to x-ray the tooth to make sure that all signs of infection are gone. We suggest you clean your teeth at least once a day, preferably with a tooth paste containing fluoride. Cut down on foods containing a lot of sugar, and ensure you come to us for a check up at least once every 6 months.

    Happy Patients

My experience in the O Connor dental health was pleasent. As a person who is nervous about visiting the dentist i felt very relaxed both in the waiting room and on the chair.Over the years i have attended a few different dentists and this has been the one practice where i felt relaxed and at ease due to the care of the staff. Before my procedures it was explained to me by the staff what to expect and i found this helped put me at ease. For any one who is nervous of visiting the dentists i would strongly recommend this practice.

My daughter needed orthodontic treatment. Tony did a very comprehensive plan for my daughter and went through it with me and my daughter in great detail before he began the treatment. We knew how long it was going to take and what exactly was involved. What I liked about Tony was, he was so enthusiastic himself about the treatment and took great pride in getting it right, tweaking a bit here and there to make sure he got the best result. He explained everything to my daughter and encouraged her through the treatment. Tony does not just look at the teeth but also the shape of her mouth and the overall look. I would highly recommend Tony and his team, he is a genuine, passionate and meticulous about his work and a very nice person as well. My daughter has a lovely smile and my younger daughter can't wait to start her treatment as she sees the fantastic results of Tony's work and can't wait to have the same fantastic smile.
