Dr. Tony O'Connor

General Dentist

After graduating from UCC in 1979 with an honours degree in Biochemistry I worked as a research assistant on a project on Cystic Fibrosis in Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children, Dublin. Dr Michael Murphy the current President of UCC was a participating researcher on this project. I later returned to UCC to begin my dental studies and graduated with a B.D.S. in 1986. I spent 3 years in the UK working on the National Health System, before returning to Cork with my young Family where I opened up my Family Dental Practice in 1989 in Ballincollig. Over the last 26 years I have always pursued any opportunity to advance my dental education. I have taken many post-graduate courses in areas such as Implantology, Endodontics, and Dental Occlusion, both to enrich and expand my Dental knowledge and offer my Patients the very best treatment possible. However the one area that has significantly excited me and one that I have concentrated on taking most of the post graduate courses over the last 17 years is Orthodontics, or more importantly, the study of Dento-Facial-Orthopaedics. As a general Dentist for the past 26 years, I have had the advantage of observing many patients who present with broken, decayed, worn down, and crooked teeth. While the latest technology has enhanced the more efficient restoration of teeth, it is only in recent years that new research highlights and explains the actual causes of tooth fracture (apart from decay), teeth grinding, TMJ dysfunction and pain, and WHY teeth become crooked in the first place. We have modified our Practice to concentrate on identifying, addressing and treating the actual causes of crooked teeth. We are the only Practice in Ireland, and I believe in England offering this Unique Orthodontic / Myofunctional treatment combination, even though this type of treatment has been well established in over 100 countries globally. As you can see, Dentistry is a journey just like my life. it is ever changing and challenging, but also great fun and exciting. I hope that when you read further, I can help you understand your dental problems and facilitate you in making the vest possible choice of the dental services offered to you at O'Connor Dental Health.
